The red24 Spartans recorded their fifth defeat in 9 games on Monday night going down by 20 runs to a comitted Fantastic 8 outfit. Fielding first the Spartans did well to restrict the 8 to 121 runs in their allotted 16 overs, bowling excellent lines and lengths. Derica Dericastan bowled particularly well taking 3 wickets for one run in two overs. Other top bowling performances were recorded from TNT and WMD, who took 5 wickets for 23 runs in their combined 4 overs. In the field Capt Rob aka Hamburger Pie Rob fielded like a teenage girl in a discount store, in a state of frantic ecstasy, taking a superb 'one hander lander' turning a certain 4 into a 7 run turnaround. Without his majestic and masterful fielding display the score could have been much much worse (I'll be expecting payment for this Rob). Marius aka Wounded Cripple , and stand in Mimi, also performed well on the night.
Batting second under failing light was always going to be difficult and with the prospect of a cold drink at the upstairs bar it seemed the opening pair of Wounded and Mimi had their eyes set on 'higher honours.' Nuff said. TNT and WMD came in next and laid a mediocre platform for the rest of the run chase managing a meagre 31 runs, taking the team total to 37 after 8. Ultimately, despite a spirit fightback from Wiggles, Capt Rob, Harry and Dericastan the Spartans were outclassed on the night by the table topping 8s. The Spartans play their next game on Monday 21 May against the Ghekhos in the league semis.
