The exploits of the 24s cricket team will be immortalised forever on Friday when Labia thatre release "So Close: The story of the season that wasnt meant to be?" It is a gripping account of the unbeaten run the 24s had before losing out narrowly in the final game of the season. The season like the film was filled with magic moments, and its these moments that chinese director Shoo Poo Loo took advantage of, when his brilliance created this 72 minute epic. Commenting on the film at the Shanghai opening, Poo Loo said that " Iz wondarfurr occassion, I rike popcorn." Its no wonder this man is considered amongst the leading Chinese directors of all time.
Inset: pictured here are the three leading ladies Qi, Wei and Mok who play Woogy, TNT and MOM in So Close.
The movie is loosely based on the season of the 24s, as mentioned above, and includes that epic final game against Blue Streak that was lost by a measly 4 runs. It tells the tale of how the evil Hockey Dance Clan (HDC) stole away one of the mainstay 24s players, Trinity, and the meoteoric rise of Miyako to hero come villain in that fatal grudge match played only last week. The tale also centres on Bundes inner battle with an addiction to muffins and how he overcame this disability to become one of the foremost fielders and bowlers in the city. His character in the film is played by Mongolian lead man, Akgoj Berliner, who has played such notable characters as tree #4 in Lord of the Rings (2004), Bogey at 5 o'clock in Top Gun (1988) and Ronald in McDonalds: The story Supersize didnt tell you (2006). He was unlucky to have his scene cut from Mariah Carey's smash hit Glitter(1999).
The elements contained in this movie are startling and it is suprising that Poo Loo managed to fit so much into 72 minutes. It really felt as if I was watching the neverending story at the premier last week. The movie has also grabbed headlines for its amazing climax. With 7 runs left to win Keeno Colling is left with only one ball to take victory. The fireworks and attention to detail in the final scene are stunning and worth the ticket price. So if you want to see this film it is showing at the Labia from the 30th of September. The film carries an age restriction of 21 and sensitive viewers are advised to stay away.
