The Legion opened their account with a not so convincing 6-5 victory over unfancied Carlsburg on Wednesday night in a dreary grading game at the Stadium of Light. There were moments of brilliance during the first half, however. New signing Andy Westwood slotted the first goal of the night with a well constructed move down the left flank. Beating his defender easily he slotted the ball into the far corner with blistfull aplomb, showing that this new cap can play with both the left and right foot. The human highlight reel, Yosh Sato, made it two shortly thereafter with a super C slam from 10 metres out that left the Carlsburg keeper scratching his head and thanking the Maker that the empty net and not his face were on course for a meeting of supersonic kinetic friction. Carlsburg were full value for their agrarian approach to the fixture and pulled two back before the end of the fisrt half after Yosh uncharacteristically failed to convert from the penalty spot following a deliberate hand ball by a Carlsburg defender.
The second half was a more even affair with the game swinging from end to end as the players tired. Yosh and Dean added to the tallie after the break and with the game evenly poised at 5-5 WMD slotted home from a metre out after a lucky bounce of the ball caught the keeper off gaurd, taking the game 6-5.
Capn Rob, who had another wall-like game, was pleased with the game saying "it was a good game, it was a soso game, and yet a good game, now lets eat pie". Although nonsensical, it summed up the mood after the fixture.
The Legion will be boosted by the return of Shaun, who failed to pass a late fitness; however, the Legion will need to raise the intensity if their season is to end in gold and not, mid table obscurity.
